House Over Workshop
This interior renovation of a single-family Edwardian residence in San Francisco’s Potrero Hill neighborhood redefines the home with a focus on light, volume, and attention to detail. Shaped by the original character of the Edwardian house, the main design move opens the living and kitchen area to the double-height volume above, while introducing new rear façade windows and a skylight that fill the space with natural light and frame distant views of the Bay.
The modern design carefully balances respect for historic elements with contemporary interventions. The client’s design sensibility further informs the project, with careful consideration given to materials, fixtures, and hardware with everyday elements enhancing the architectural character. At the basement level, a workshop with increased ceiling height and abundant natural light provides a flexible space for craft and creativity.
The project balances meticulous attention to detail with spatial generosity, resulting in a home that is both functional and expressive while honoring the original character of the house.
